An unexpected and mystery road closure on the southbound carriageway of Medina Way in Newport is causing traffic chaos this morning (Wednesday).
At 08:35, Island Roads said that the southbound carriageway was being closed with immediate effect due to a ‘police incident’.
The road closure came into force just after 09:00 but now – some 40 minutes later – there is no sign of any police activity on or around the dual carriageway.
Motorists are being diverted from St Mary’s Junction down through the Riverway Industrial Estate to rejoin the dual carriageway at the Curry’s on slip. This is causing significant delays, especially for those heading from Forest Road and Cowes, as well as those exiting the industrial estate at B&Q.
It is unclear whether today’s closure is in relation to last night’s road traffic collision involving a motorcyclist, as previously reported by Island Echo.
UPDATE @ 10:56 – Police have confirmed that the closure is in force in relation to last night’s motorcycle collision, which has left a 19-year-old with serious injuries.

UPDATE @ 11:59 – The road has now re-opened to all traffic following the conclusion of on-scene investigations.

The lights do not seem to have been reprogrammed to allow for the chaos at st Mary’s. Still saying green to head into newport
Of course they couldn’t have made their observations last night when the road was empty. Probably had to get back to their takeaways and Your Home Made Perfect on the telly. Then had to watch latest episode of From and lose some money online gambling. It’s a tough life.
Evidence staff had to come from mainland, perhaps? We can all pay more council tax if we want more police professionals readily available all night right on IOW. Or ask Tory government to stop cutting police budget, either way works.
Crash investigation team !. There is a CCTV camera facing both ways at junction and witnesses – all that’s needed. Closing the road and potentially causing further accidents down through industrial not good because of irritated drivers late. We’ve been told it was single rider accident ? if he was driving badly then he has suffered unfortunate consequences, no need further consequences. We all just wish him to be Ok now, what’s happened has happened.
But given number accidents on Island we should have own team.
Maybe teach the island cops how to use a tape measure and take a video too. Would probably get in the way of their other activities but hardly taxing.
He had only passed his test that day & had the bike about 6 hours! I know the kid, nice lad but bikes today are to focussed to let these kids loose on them! It was a very strange accident to be honest I have been riding big bikes for 55 years & I can’t work out what in the hell happened there!
Traffic cones have been at the side of the dual carriageway for days, I very much doubt it was unplanned.
