UPDATE: Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge and Ventnor and the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are responding to persons trapped in mud on the River Medina in Newport this evening (Wednesday).
The incident is unfolding on the banks of the river opposite Newport Rowing Club.
Coastguard officers are using mud rescue equipment to reach a female casualty who is said to be in a state of partial undress.
Fire crews from multiple stations have been mobilised, including the water rescue unit from Newport.
UPDATE – A woman has been taken to St Mary’s Hospital by ambulance for a check up having been safely rescued by HM Coastguard. She is said to be distressed but uninjured.
A second woman has been met by Coastguard officers on the West side of the Medina having self-rescued.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have not been required to carry out any rescues but have been on hand to assist Coastguard colleagues, if required.
The incident is now drawing to close – one of many on the River Medina in the past week.
