A well-known witty British Conservative Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament for North-East Somerset since the general election in 2010 is set to visit Newport’s Chris the King College.
Jacob Rees-Mogg has gained a reputation for his humorous speeches and has made several television appearances on programmes such as ‘Have I Got News for You’, ‘The Politics Show’ and ‘Newsnight’. He was educated at Eton and read History at Oxford University before pursuing a career in finance and setting up a successful capital management company.
Mr Rees-Mogg will be addressing students, staff and parents at Christ the King College next Friday (21st November) between 16:00–18:00. Members of the public are also very welcome to attend the talk which will take place in the new Sixth Form Assembly Hall on the Upper College site.
The main focus for the talk will be life as a Christian and the opportunities and challenges which come as a result, in politics and everyday life. Mr Rees-Mogg will also share insights on current political issues and his varied education and career to date. The talk will be followed by a fantastic opportunity to pose questions for Mr Rees-Mogg, whose visit forms a part of Christ the King College’s Visiting Speakers Programme.
Principal of Christ the King College, Pat Goodhead, has said:
“It is vital that students are given every possible opportunity to broaden their understanding of the wider world, become knowledgeable about current and international affairs and develop independent and informed views about important issues; exposing them to a wide variety of speakers is one way in which we achieve this at Christ the King College and we are very excited to be welcoming Mr Rees-Mogg.”
Those wishing to attend are asked to report to the main College Reception by 15:45. Mr Rees-Mogg has very kindly agreed to the College requesting voluntary donations on arrival which will be donated, in full, to the Joe Ellis Trust Fund.
Cllr Chris Whitehouse, who arranged the visit to the College, and in whose ward of Newport West the College is based, today said:
“Jacob is a real brick for agreeing to do this event. He is witty, incisive and influential. It should be a thoroughly enjoyable occasion.”
