A Ryde man who crashed his motorcycle in Binstead while over the drug drive limit has been handed a lengthy driving ban and a community order.
Oakley Shaw-Lusted, 21, of St Georges Close, appeared before magistrates for sentencing earlier this month after previously admitting driving with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the legal limit.
The court heard that on 27th November 2024, Shaw-Lusted was riding a Yamaha motorcycle on Binstead Hill when he was involved in a collision with a van at the roundabout at the top of the hill, as first reported by Island Echo. He sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics.
Toxicology tests later revealed that Shaw-Lusted had 93 micrograms of Benzoylecgonine – a cocaine metabolite – in his blood, exceeding the specified legal limit.
Shaw-Lusted’s previous conviction for drug driving, in May 2023, was noted in court. He was previously banned from driving for 12 months after pleading guilty to driving while under the influence of cannabis.
Magistrates sentenced the 21-year-old to a 40-month driving disqualification, imposed a 12-month community order including 100 hours of unpaid work, and ordered him to complete 10 days of rehabilitation activity.
He was also told to pay £85 in costs and a £114 victim surcharge.

There seems to be so many Numpty’s on the Island
breaking the rules.
If they want to risk their own lives that is fine by me,
but I am worried about the innocent persons who are
at risk due to their stupidity.
Drink and Drug driving kills!, such individuals need
banging up.
