A total of 1,332 people reported red squirrel sightings on the Isle of Wight during 2025, according to Wight Squirrel Project.
The figure is up from 1,267 people who submitted sightings in 2024, showing continued strong public interest in the Island’s red squirrel population.
The sightings were reported by members of the public to the Wight Squirrel Project, which monitors the health and movement of the protected species across the Isle of Wight.
Wight Squirrel Project says red squirrels are doing well this year, with one indicator being the number of squirrels killed on the Island’s roads.
Although road deaths are unfortunate, the organisation says they can reflect a healthy and active population moving around different habitats.
The Isle of Wight remains one of the few areas in England where red squirrels continue to thrive without the presence of grey squirrels, which have caused major declines elsewhere in the country.
