A well-respected charter captain, who went missing from his home in Cowes last month, was found hanging in a public toilet, an inquest opening has heard.
The inquest touching on the death of Mark Timothy James was opened and adjourned at the Isle of Wight Coroner’s Court in Newport earlier this afternoon (Wednesday).
Senior Coroner Caroline Summeray heard how Mr James was last seen on 22nd April and was reported missing from his home on Victoria Road, Cowes on 24th April.
As previously reported by Island Echo, a missing person search was launched by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, with concerns growing for Mr James’ welfare.
Sadly, Mr James’ body was found in a public toilet on The Cut on the afternoon of 27th April – 5 days after he was last seen. The area was cordoned off as detectives were called in to investigate the circumstances of the death.
It is now known that a member of staff from Cowes Town Council made the discovery at 14:39 on that Monday afternoon.
A post-mortem investigation conducted on 7th May has determined the cause of death to be hanging.
The inquest has been adjourned to a provisional date of 13th November.

Terrible, but still no excuse for the police to park like that, Lead by example!
The fact that it is cordoned off so no pedestrians have to walk into the road to get around the police vehicle is beside the point I suppose….
Are you an idiot? That’s very clearly a cordoned off area with a closed road.
very sad, the poor person who found him first!
So sad. Thought’s are with his family xxx
