A Shanklin man has been sentenced for stealing apple juice, a muffin and a sausage roll from an honesty shop in Havenstreet last month. Alex Cooper, 26, of Oaklyn Gardens, admitted theft from a shop, possession of a controlled drug of Class A and failing to comply with the requirements of a community order when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week. Crown Prosecutor Liz Miller told the court that on the evening of 9th July. at around 23:30, the proprietor of The Little Cow Shed heard a loud thudding noise coming from the honesty shop. Having decided to go and investigate the matter, the shop owner saw a man throwing foodstuffs into the boot of a car, before then making off. Upon reviewing the CCTV footage, Cooper was seen leaving with 3 cartons of apple juice, a muffin and a sausage roll. Another male – also seen on CCTV – has already appeared at the Isle of Wight Crown Court. Then, on 6th June, whilst in St Helens, cocaine was found in Cooper’s wallet. This led to a charge, which Cooper pleaded guilty to on Tuesday. The 26-year-old also admitted failing to comply with the requirements of a community order which he was handed back in October 2022. The court heard how, to date, Cooper has attended 24 of the 96 appointments offered to him. Defending Cooper, Michael McGoldrick told the court that the theft from the Little Cow Shed was ‘low value’ and that Cooper was hungry but didn’t have money to pay for the goods. Magistrates handed Cooper a further 40 hours of unpaid work to his existing community order. He was ordered to pay compensation to The Little Cow Shed of £10 and was fined £120 for the offence of possession of cocaine. He was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and £60 costs to probation.

What a pi55 take!!! The courts are a joke!
Ah. I see… no money to pay for the food, yet was driving a car and can afford to buy cocaine. He must think the magistrates came over on the last banna boat….
Clearly from the sentence doled out, he was right…
What a pathetic sentence, in other words he was told don’t be a naughty boy & don’t do it again. The justice system is a joke.
What justice system mate.
Rat bag cooper and his friends all need a life
“Didn’t have money to pay for the goods” but had money for cocaine… says it all really, scumbag!
Defending Cooper, Michael McGoldrick told the court that the theft from the Little Cow Shed was ‘low value’ and that Cooper was hungry but didn’t have money to pay for the goods
No money for food but can put petrol in his car and buy drugs makes sense
So he couldn’t afford food, but could afford drugs!
He couldn’t afford to buy food, but could afford to buy cocaine. Low life dreg.
Have seen this scumbag he so ugly! His scabby mates are just as bad dirty coke rats
Have you seen his little crew just a bunch off lesbians who need sorting out
You homophobic?
Sometimes you have to be when they are committing crime and make people lives miserable, yea I will be homophobic
Why does the stupid DWP keep on giving this low life thieving shit free handouts and a free home, but won’t help a workman pay his mortgage?
It’s not the worst thing to happen there. Letting the hunt ride from there probably is though.
He can clearly find the money for his coke habit – you can be sure his dealer isn’t supplying that gratis. If he is flouting the court order by showing up to only 1 in 4 of his supervision appointments he needs a stiffer penalty. The problem is that the prisons are ful to bursting with feral scum. A swifter and more cost effective penalty is needed for those who do not pay fines and ignore court orders. Reintroduction of corporal punishment springs to mind – inexpnsive and effective.
Lets see what Michael McGoldrick thinks when they break into his house and steal “low value goods” not sure he would view a pathetic sentence as right then, hungry or not. The system is broken, there is no deterrent at all, it will get a lot worse. Prison has become a extended break, meals and board supplied.
