A man has been detained under the Mental Health Act after an incident in Ryde last night (Sunday) in which a number of windows were smashed and an individual took to sitting in the middle of the road.
As first reported by Island Echo, Police were called to Lind Street at just before 18:00 where a man was found to be sitting in the middle of the carriageway outside the former Ryde Theatre building.
It had been reported to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary that an act of criminal damage had been committed.
Officers soon discovered that 6 windows on the ground floor of the Ryde Town Council offices had been smashed.
Island Echo understands that the individual’s protest was brought on after a dispute with the authorities about his dog.
Police have this morning confirmed that the male has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

I trust that his benefit money will be cut to pay for the windows – after all, he does need to see some sort of punishment for this.
He is being held against his will, for an indefinite period of time.
Surely this counts as some sort of punishment ?
Yep. Agree. Get the little rat off our streets.
Really and benefit money is all you can think off
Said it was a nutter, this sort need putting in Asylums. Not safe to be allowed to live in ‘care in the community’.
They can’t help being nuts, and we can’t help not wanting them anywhere near us, for IF we did, then we would be as nuts as them.
Hence the MP’s, Police, and top councillors NEVER have them living anywhere near them.
So what happened the council said you can’t have a dog in one of our properties. So he’s got the hump and decided to go and smash half a dozen windows at the council offices?. Now we all need to feel sorry for him because he’s got mental health issues ?
Also nothing to do with Ryde Town Council. Dog matters are dealt with by the Isle of Wight Council. The numpty smashed the wrong windows. What a jerk.
Small things to you might seem petty and daft ,but when the dark clouds of mental health cover you’re eyes you act without any reason or sense ,before you stand ready to condemn find out the true facts then judge ,I’m sure you are waiting to reply either about my name or how leftie I am
Some people only have a dog in life, maybe it was the last straw in his life losing his dog an actual being.People are more bothered about the corrupt council’s windows
What Country are you from then ?
He’ll probably be voted in as leader of the IW council.
Mental health is something that through no fault of the individual person ,circumstances and something so small and minor somebody else to that person it can be huge .I suffer from mental health myself and I like so many British soldiers who were in Afghanistan suffer every day ,it’s horrible to go through this ,but even worse when people who judge extremly are quick to accuse before looking at the big picture
Correct, but a crime is a crime. We all have a responsibility to look after our mental well-being, and whilst I have sympathy for those who suffer, using that as an excuse to lob half a dozen bricks through office windows is not acceptable. Nobody is judging his health, only his actions.
Most of these scum are on mental health issues, they make it all up just to claim benefits and us tax payers are paying for there benefits these scum need to be whipped in public.
Don’t worry dear council, it’ll be added to the our next rise in council tax to cover the cost. It won’t be you covering it god forbid you delve into your pockets wouldn’t want to deprive you of your commission.
Who else should pay for it? Options are limited. The man who chucked the bricks? Yes, but good luck getting any money out of him. It’ll be insurance, which of course is funded by the public, unless the premises are rented in which case the landlord will be insured, in which case no cost to the public.
That’s not how rent works. The landlord just passes the costs on to the tenant plus a bunch of profit.
It’s cheaper to own than rent.
Just very sad…… You don’t have all the facts……. If someone tried to take one of my dogs it would be more than a few smashed windows…… Hope he gets the help he needs and the dog will be OK
I just want to know how, and where the dog is???
