43-year-old Stuart Le Ray has pleaded guilty to harassment after calling his estranged wife more than 300 times, following her around the Co-op car park and even threatening to break her jaw.
Appearing from the cells, Le Ray stood in the dock at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday where the bench heard details of his course of harassment against his ex-partner, whom he has been married to for 4 years but split from in October 2021.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, laid out the details of the case after a guilty plea was given by Le Ray, who currently resides with his mother at Birch Gardens in Binstead.
Ms Miller told the court that on 3rd November, Le Ray arrived at his estranged wife’s house in Ryde – where she had been living since August – and started making threats, saying he would ‘break her f**king jaw’. She dialled 999 with the exchange of words heard by the call operator.
Le Ray was arrested on 7th November but continued to contact his ex. Then, on 5th December, Le Ray spotted his wife in the Co-Op car park in Ryde as he was exiting in his vehicle. He did a u-turn in the road and followed her around the car park after making a w**ker sign at her.
Unsurprisingly, Le Ray was arrested once again and was charged. However, this time he was remanded in custody after appearing before the courts.
Defending, Michael McGoldrick explained that as a result of being remanded, Le Ray had spent over 30 days before behind bars – including Christmas and New Year – which is the equivalent of a 10-week prison sentence. He told the bench that whilst on remand at HMP Isle of Wight Le Ray had been a ‘model prisoner’ – as highlighted by references from prison staff.
Mr McGoldrick said that his client accepts that alcohol and substance misuse is at the core of the offending and that the painter/decorator had sought support from Inclusion.
The case has been adjourned for an all-options pre-sentence report to be compiled. Le Ray will appear back before Magistrates on 3rd February.
He has been given conditional bail until that time.
Separately, Le Ray pleaded guilty to a speeding offence on Leeson Road, Ventnor on 4th May last year whilst he was working for Briddlesford Farm. The matter will be dealt with on 3rd February.
