A man is recovering after being badly beaten by a ‘gang of men’ who allegedly jumped out of a vehicle and assaulted him at the roadside in Shanklin earlier this week.
The incident happened on Church Road, next to Big Mead rec, shortly after 21:00 on Monday night as the victim – aged in his 60s – was walking along the pavement.
It’s said a number of individuals pulled up in a car, assaulted the male and then sped off.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which has left the victim with facial injuries. They have not been able to confirm the specifics of the case at this stage.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has told Island Echo:
”We’re investigating after a man was discovered with facial injuries on Church Road, Shanklin, on the evening of Monday 23 January this year.
“Police were called at 9.24pm.
“Enquiries remain ongoing into the exact circumstances surrounding how this man came to be injured”.

As previously reported by Island Echo, Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team stopped to assist the victim whilst they were en-route to an emergency incident at Shanklin Esplanade.
He was then passed into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
