A Sandown man with more than 20 convictions on his record has been fined after Police found him in possession of cannabis resin near Barton Road, Newport.
James Smith, 41 of Park Mews in Sandown, admitted a single charge of possession of a controlled drug of class-B (cannabis resin) when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (19th August).
Prosecuting, Lauren McConnell, told the court that Smith was searched by Police near an address on Barton Road in Newport.
In Smith’s possession, a small amount of cannabis resin was found, something Smith admitted when interviewed by Police.
Smith, who has 24 convictions on his record, last appeared on Island Echo back in July when he was handed a suspended prison sentence following the commission of 4 theft offences.
Defending Smith, Oscar Vincent told the court that his client was only approached by Police because they smelt a strong aroma of cannabis and that he made full admissions when he was interviewed a month after the incident.
The 41-year-old was handed a £120 fine and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £48 surcharge fee.
The court heard how Smith has several thousands of pounds worth in fines outstanding.

I thought if fines were not paid, imprisonment happens,
obviously not.
Too think years ago persons were killed for stealing
a loaf of bread in Britain, take 1708 for example when 2
children were hanged in Britain for such actions.
How times have changed, people can live on credit.
Not sure what your point is. Are you suggesting we should have a return to capital punishment for children committing minor thefts?
