An Isle of Wight tanning business is celebrating the opening of its second salon, opening the doors on Ryde High Street.
Total Tanning has been a stalwart of Newport’s St James’ Street for several years, with hundreds of customers flocking to catch a tan each week. Now, the business has expanded to the East Wight, offering its top of the range sunbeds to the people of Ryde.
It’s been a year of heavy investment for the company which now boasts a total of 7 sunbeds across its two shops – all of them the latest in design, efficiency and safety.
The business is going from strength to strength, having introduced the EVA range of lay-down sunbeds earlier this year to offer more options for tanners and increase accessibility.
Proprietor, Karen Richardson, said:
“When we bought the business just a month before the first coronavirus lockdown, we never thought we’d be opening a second shop in a million years. But here we are, four years later, celebrating our opening. It’s surreal.
“We set out to provide a top notch experience for our customers and we’ve worked really hard to bring that to the East Wight.
“One of the biggest priorities for us as a business is to promote responsible tanning to more and more people. When people tan with us they know that they’re in safe hands as we actively work to educate and keep our customers safe, all in line with the Sunbed Association guidelines.”
As a member of the Sunbed Association, Total Tanning is also helping to lead the way when it comes to tanning responsibly – having recently introduced a new system to keep track of customers tanning habits to make sure no one exceeds the scientifically recommended tanning limits.
With winter approaching, a busy tanning season is expected. Karen added:
“As winter draws in, many people begin to experience the effects of dwindling vitamin D due to the lack of exposure to natural sunlight.
“Sunbed lamps simulate the sun and emit UVA and UVB but they go a stage further and control the output with a balance of UV to minimise the risk of burning and maximise the tanning. We offer all new customers a consultation to make sure tanning is suitable for them.”
Using a sunbed has been shown to boost cellular health, mental health, and help ease symptoms of skin disorders such as psoriasis.
Ryde Town Councillor, Karen Lucioni, said:
“I am always excited to see new independent shops opening in Ryde.
“We are so lucky to have such a vibrant business community. I always shop local at every opportunity.”
