Icy conditions on the Island’s roads have led to at least 2 crashes tonight (Monday), including 1 involving a Land Rover Discovery that has rolled over near Havenstreet.
The incident has occurred on Combley Road, close to Lynn Cross.
Island Echo is told that the driver was travelling towards Ryde when they hit black ice, resulting in a loss of control. The car then hit the bank and rolled over, spinning almost 180 degrees.
Just seconds later another car lost control, forcing the casualty to jump into a hedge to escape any potential injury. The 2nd vehicle collided with the bank, missing the overturned Discovery, before driving off.
The driver has escaped injury.
Police have been alerted to the incident but are not yet in attendance.
The road is blocked in its entirety and is extremely dangerous for motorists – with this reporter witnessing another near miss whilst on scene.
Meanwhile, there has been a collision on Middle Road at Calbourne, near to Calbourne Mill. It is thought ice is to blame there also.
A yellow weather warning for ice is in force across the Isle of Wight, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has tonight warned drivers to take care on the roads due to black ice. Taking to Twitter, the Force has said:
“Be careful on the roads. Due to the current temperature we are having a lot of reports of black ice.
“Please drive to the conditions and slow down.
“Drive to arrive”.

Should have j turned
What does that mean j turn, no such ih
There’s this thing called google, you might have heard of it
J turn when the car wasn’t on it’s wheels, I mean this comment isn’t even funny!
>>>/b/
Well it would have to be on its wheels at some point.
I’m surprised you have the mental capacity to even type that. Did your carer do it for you?
Try using the English language. It will considerably help normal people
When are the gritters? All came flying out when it was cold with no rain, and now we have the perfect conditions for ice due to all the standing water and nothing?
Perhaps it would help if Island roads kept water from adjoining land off the roads, and also gritted them when its this cold.
I slid at the junction approx 19.35 this evening, so dangerous and I was only doing 20 mph. Any reason why Island Roads didn’t grit the road as it is a bus route? Island Roads?
Dangerous…. Newnham Road and Stroud Wood Road Junction… very icy, My car skidded across the road entering the junction of Stroud Wood Road… please take care.
Black ice my arse.
Driving to fast more likely.
Im sure black ice didnt help but yea prob speeding
Every one who has the chelsea tractors have no idea about driving them apart from shopping!
Does this type of driving happen in Scotland, or is it just an island thing ?
Drivers don’t know how to SLOW DOWN on this island. Majority don’t drive to the road conditions. It doesn’t even enter their heads!
4×4 Drivers…. In the winter weather they think they are so safe. They have the extra traction to get them going, but it’s don’t help them with the slowing. Everyone needs to slow down and not take risks during these freezing temperatures. Unfortunately there will be alot more incidents over the next few days due to poor driving.
Prius with winter tires and a cautious driver would probably come out better than that 4×4 Land Rover, lol. It’s like a meme right here.
I really don’t know why the police even bother bringing the crash investigation team over from the mainland, should just ask all the experts on here that know every factor about every accident without leaving their keyboards, save thousands of pounds every year.
Maybe the council should ensure drains are clear and water is not left to pool and freeze. Every single large puddle we see has a blocked drain as the cause. Why?
