The Isle of Wight’s very own Plastic Mermaids have just revealed a third single, ‘I Still Like Kelis’, taken from their self-produced debut album ‘Suddenly Everyone Explodes’.
New single ‘I Still like Kelis’ is a hazy indie-pop gem featuring crunchy guitars and distorted synths. It comes from their new sonically adventurous album, which is set to be released on 27th May 2019.
Vocalist Doug Richards describes the single as:
“Two people who used to hang out and now are in different places. In the lyrics of the second verse I sing ‘But in a microscopic way we’re tangled up eternally, I’ll spin the same as you’. This is a reference to quantum entanglement, a phenomenon where two particles are linked and move in the same way even though they’re on different sides of a room or universe even”.
The video for ‘I Still Like Kelis’ expands further on this idea – 2 particles are born at the dawn of time then split up and travel through the Universe but move and evolve in similar ways before eventually both ending up on Earth and meeting as humans.
Doug continues:
“I’m not sure how I let myself get sucked into the idea of stop-motion again… The video took bloody AGES to make but I guess I enjoyed it – there’s something quite meditative about sitting down for four hours and pushing about a piece of clay. It’s just a bit demoralising when you realise you’ve only shot 14 seconds”.
Other recently revealed singles from the forthcoming debut LP include ‘1996’ and psychedelic-pop single ‘Floating in a Vacuum’, both of which have been warmly received by fans and critics alike, supported at radio by BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, John Kennedy from Radio X (who recently gave the band an Xposure live session), BBC6 Music’s Lauren Laverne, Chris Hawkins and Radcliffe & Maconie.
