A pair of Isle of Wight men are heading north this September on separate endurance challenges to raise funds and awareness for Men Only IOW, a grassroots mental health organisation based in Ryde.
Aaron has already begun his journey on foot, walking over 350 miles from the Isle of Wight to Newcastle United’s St James’ Park. Facing rough conditions and fatigue along the way, Aaron’s walk aims to highlight the daily battles many people face with mental health, addiction and isolation.
Later this month, fellow supporter Dave will take to the road on 2 wheels, cycling from Ryde to Sheffield in what he has dubbed “The Big Ride”. His route will span several counties and is expected to be a major test of endurance, all in support of the same cause.
Both challenges are raising money to help keep Rodger & Steve’s Place open – the Ryde-based support hub run by Men Only IOW. The community space offers peer support, creative sessions and a safe, welcoming environment for both men and women in need of connection and understanding.
Karl Hart, Managing Director of Men Only IOW, has said:
“Aaron and Dave are doing something remarkable, not for medals or applause, but to show what men are capable of when they push forward together.
“Their journeys remind us that mental health is not a private battle – it’s something we can face as a community.”
Men Only IOW supports hundreds of people each month, providing vital mental health support services to those who may feel they have nowhere else to turn.
Members of the public are being encouraged to support the fundraising efforts by donating and sharing the 2 men’s stories online. All funds raised will go directly towards sustaining Men Only’s services on the Isle of Wight.
