The Isle of Wight College recently welcomed over 200 primary school pupils from across the Isle of Wight for a series of inspiring taster days aimed at broadening horizons, raising aspirations and supporting children as they prepare to move into secondary school.
The events followed on from the Start Small, Dream Big Primary Careers Pilot 2024 – a national initiative led by the Careers and Enterprise Company in partnership with the Solent Careers Hub. The programme helps spark early conversations about careers by giving children meaningful experiences and employer interactions that connect learning to the world of work.
Throughout the week, pupils enjoyed a wide range of hands-on workshops and activities across the college campus. From creative arts to hospitality, construction to digital media, the sessions offered young learners a valuable glimpse into the possibilities their futures might hold.
A highlight of the week was the High Seas Tea on Thursday – a themed afternoon tea event hosted with real guests including family members. Pupils took the lead in preparing the food, supported by the college catering team, and served their guests in a professional dining setting.
The event was generously sponsored by the Royal Yacht Squadron Foundation, whose support made the experience even more special.
A Year 6 Teacher from Summerfields Primary School has said:
“Can I just say what a fabulous time my Year 6s had yesterday. It was so well planned and organised and gave them such a breadth of experiences that they otherwise would never have had. We would like to say thank you to everyone involved. Hopefully, you will be running it again next year. If so, we’d love to come! Thanks.”
A Year 6 Teacher from Hunnyhill Primary School added:
“All students REALLY enjoyed the day – all the college staff were so enthusiastic and engaging. Sessions were hands on, interactive and well paced. Thank you for having us!”
Organisers have thanked the Royal Yacht Squadron Foundation for their sponsorship, along with the individuals and college staff who gave their time and energy to make the events a success.
The taster days have not only supported transition for young pupils but have opened their eyes to a world of opportunities, helping them to dream big from an early age.
