Isle of Wight midwife Kirsty Arnold has been named as one of this year’s top 10 birth workers worldwide and is in the final to reach ‘Birth Worker of the Year’ after being nominated by Ryde mum, Charlotte Pugmire.
Charlotte and her husband Marc nominated midwife Kirsty after the birth of their daughter, Darcie, back in April following Kirsty’s amazing support during her pregnancy and in particular her C-section.
During Charlotte’s pregnancy, the midwifery team at the Isle of Wight NHS Trust discovered Charlotte had an extra piece of the placenta which caused a complication. Using her knowledge Kirsty took time to ensure the entire placenta was removed.

Darcie’s mum Charlotte has said:
“Kirsty was incredible during my C-section with Darcie. I have never met someone so passionate about their job or profession. Kirsty took the time to explain everything to me and my partner, she made sure I wasn’t in any pain, and was just a constant source of support throughout my whole delivery.”
Speaking to Island Echo, mum-of-2 Charlotte has said:
“I met Kirsty when we came in for my elective C-section and she was instantly welcoming and warming.
“It was quite daunting coming in and she put my mind at ease straight away and it felt like we known her forever.

“She was the brilliant from the beginning right up until discharge.”

Since the news was announced on social media other mums, who have also been supported by Kirsty, have echoed Charlotte’s sentiments.
Kirsty gained her qualification after 3 years studying at Bournemouth University and only qualified in September following a placement at the Isle of Wight NHS Trust.
The only British nominee on the list, Kirsty is competing against 8 nominees from The United States and a sole nominee from The Netherlands.
On being nominated, Kirsty has told Island Echo:
“It’s just completely overwhelming, I didn’t expect it at all I come to work to a job that I absolutely love, and to be able to make a difference to families is what I’m here for.
“To go from being a couple to being a family, is one of the best moments of anybody’s life and to be part of that is absolutely amazing.
“To be the only British nominee and to be nominated so early on in my training is amazing.
“Without the support of my colleagues over the last 3 years while training I wouldn’t be half the midwife I am today. I’m so grateful to work with such an amazing team.”

So she qualified in September and got a nomination on the strength of one testimonial! What a silly award. Plenty of midwives have been delivering hundreds of babies for years and doing sterling work but not nominated.
Just be happy for her . She made a huge difference in a mums experience and many more I’m sure . Unless you have been in a situation of giving birth and experiencing certain fears , you can’t put a value on how much that support means . Why put a negative spin on someone’s achievements ?
