A 66-year-old yachtsman in pain from a back and neck injury was rushed ashore by Cowes RNLI lifeboat this afternoon (Tuesday).
The man had been aboard the 30ft ‘Connie’ on the wind-swept Solent when he was struck hard by the main sheet (rope) attached to the boom whilst near East Lepe Buoy.
The lifeboat was launched to the emergency at 12:40.
After being examined by a lifeboat crew member and fitted with a neck brace, the casualty was carefully transferred to the lifeboat. He was then taken to Trinity Landing, Cowes where he was carried on a stretcher to an awaiting ambulance and conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team also attended the incident, assisting in the casualty transfer.
