An injured swan struggling to bear weight on her leg was rescued early on Thursday morning thanks to the quick action of local volunteers and animal welfare professionals.
The situation began the afternoon before (Wednesday), when local resident Derek – who regularly feeds the swans – noticed one of the birds struggling to stand and dragging her leg as she returned to the river.
Derek – who quickly alerted local Animal Charity Friends of the Animals – was asked to alert rescuers if he saw the swan again.
Shortly before 07:30 the next morning, the call came in. The swan was collected and taken straight to The People’s Vet, which had just opened for the day. There, vets Pete and Greg assessed and weighed the bird, administering pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication.
In an unexpected moment during the check-up, vet Pete was sprayed in the face by the swan, adding some light-hearted humour to the morning.
Carrie from the RSPCA Isle of Wight later stepped in to take over the swan’s care, ensuring she receives ongoing rest and medication over the coming days.
Well Done to everyone involved.
Nice to read a heart warming story for a change.
I absolutely agree, much better than reading
about drink and drug drivers or uneducated persons
fighting.
Where would we be without animals, they do no
one any harm.
Great work
I pray the swan is ok, well done Derek.
