A raid by immigration officials on an Indian restaurant in Newport has resulted in a penalty referral notice being issued by the Home Office.
Immigration enforcement officers visited Tamarind on St James’ Street last Wednesday (26th April).
The property was surrounded to the front and rear as officers made entry just before 19:00.
It has been confirmed that 1 male was found to be inside the restaurant but he did not have permission to work. As a result, a civil penalty referral notice – which could lead to a fine of up to £20,000 – has been served on Tamarind.
A Home Office spokesperson has told Island Echo:
“The government is tackling illegal migration and the harm it causes by removing those with no right to be in the UK.
“We continue to work with law enforcement agencies to tackle illegal migration in all its forms.”

It’s the ones that come and claim you should be worried about
The harm it causes?. Well never mind thousands of pounds of tax money spent on operation and now the tax payer will be putting bill for housing and financial support – here he was housed, paying his way and probably doing a job hard to recruit for. Should of let him continue and monitor and process where he were.
I’m sure the 20k fine will cover it
Come on! We got a real live one. Where’s the pitchfork brigade when you need them?
Right behind you.
only one male in the place?, try calling on a saturday night when all the staff are in
All those resources to catch one illegal worker. Wow. We can all rest easy now.
It shouldn’t be a case of the fine “could be” it should be “will be” as these owners knowingly break our immigration laws to employ illegal cheap labour.
So many negative comments regarding illegal workers. They have got to be removed or the United Kingdom will be inundated with illegals and it would be a ‘free for all’. This situation must be investigated and the appropriate action taken, which should be the removal of that illegal immigrant and they be returned to their birth country or where they were residing before they came to the UK illegally.
Lots of thumbs up, fair play, but try this. Don’t send him ‘home’, just give him and other immigrants a slightly (if it’s even possible) tax threshold. It makes them a bit like home grown, British born apprentices under 21years of age. I have lots of problems with people in this country who should not be here. Especially those who don’t work and claim everything going. Foreign or domestic, doesn’t matter where they are born, get rid . If you work; fine, but the nation needs to be more savvy in tax collection for relatives of British nationals.
Perhaps we hould let more illegal immigrants in who would probably work there butts off doing
the work we are too lazy to do
Or … you can’t get a decent paid job because thousands of illegals and undesirables are flooding our system working for peanuts and driving wages down while pushing housing costs and demand up so the native peoples of these lands sink further into poverty and deprivation.
May I suggest you change the system, ma’am, not the nature people seeking something better? Notice I don’t suggest they are all refugees? They ain’t, but we are cushty compared to some places and a soft touch to boot. The immigrants ain’t doing me out of a job because I am really good at my job, but lots of Brits ain’t and they should be deported as not fit to work along with those from countries not suffering war or who can’t provide evidence of family domiciled here. I met you in the middle. Agreed ?
Total rubbish you put them up then they know they shouldn’t employee them unless they can prove there they have the Right to be here simple, fine them it’s cheap labour that needs to be stopped
But they don’t pay taxes, that is the problem.
But it’s okay to go into French waters and bring them over??????
They haven’t grasped that yet, give them time.
Maybe if the Tories had not let 100,000+ come here illegally this kind of thing would not be needed. Lets just hope they don’t take up arms against us.
Certainly no project fear here then?
As F.D.R. said himself, ‘ The only thing we have to fear is beer itself.’ I think my quote deals with the last. Regards
This tory government wants them here to provide the cheap labour to keep wages down and force people into taking Zero hours contracts, and then take away benefits but still paying low basic pay that MP’s wouldn’t even expect their children or wives to work for. I hope that at the next General Election Labour and other parties form a coalition to kick out these Tory scum who are ruining the country for workers whilst getting rich themselves.
Do you ever leave your keyboard and stop watching all the trite hogwash and conspiracy theorists?…. Try standing outside in fresh air it’s wonderful how it clears your mind and whilst your doing that you can ask yourself about the aTory Howler called Brexit, away home went all out Dentists, nurses, Dc’s… Care workers… And left us in this delightful Nirvana S… t heap of trouble…. Arms against us? They couldn’t wait to go home and be treated with respect and good pay!
Well said fedup
So odd this UK,so many claiming benefits not entitled too,so many working and claiming. Yet one guy earning his keep and doing no harm to anyone and taking no tax payers money- what this UK do ,Now he has cost thousands and will cost thousands and his life put at risk and a business ( who pay VAT, business rates and other taxes) may close. We are talking about fellow human beings.
Would suggest Immigration Officials would be better employed on Dover beach, far more fruitful.
T he photo shows they’ve been eating to much curry
Probably putting too much assafetida in the curry.
