Large crowds gathered down at Eastern Gardens in Ryde to celebrate Armed Forces Day yesterday (25th June).
Armed Forces Day in the United Kingdom is an annual event celebrated in late June to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces. Previously known as Veterans Day, the name was changed to Armed Forces Day back in 2009.
A parade started from Eastern Gardens on Esplanade and saw military veterans and personnel, local dignitaries, 3 Island marching bands, and local cadet groups take the stage between a strong crowd on either side of the road. Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight Susie Sheldon took the salute.
Other spectacles on the day included; stunt shows, BMX shows, a military vehicle procession, live music from Medina Marching Band, Vectis Corps of Drums and Isle of Wight Highland Pipes and Drums, children’s activities as well as a Spitfire flypast and parachute display.
On the cards was also a visit from a Lancaster Bomber, however earlier in the week on Friday it was cancelled as a result of engine issues on the historic aircraft.
The Spitfire didn’t disappoint however and around 16:15 eyes were fixed to to the heavens as one of the most iconic Royal Air Force fighter aircraft graced the skies for an aerobatic performance above the Island’s largest town.
Ryde locals, Islander’s and tourists alike were dazzled by the intense display before a closing ceremony brought the curtain down on another Armed Forces Day.

“In attending, you demonstrated the worth and value the Armed Forces have in our local community. A big hearty thanks to you!
“I thank you from the heart once again and truly hope you had an enjoyable day.”
A thoroughly enjoyable day and well done to the organisers. Shame about the Lanc but these things happen and as one of only two left, the BBMF took the right decision.
