A large house fire has broken out in East Cowes this afternoon (Friday).
Fire crews from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to the residential property on Princess Close at around 13:15.
4 pumping appliances from Cowes, Ryde, Sandown and Newport are on scene, as well as the Aerial Ladder Platform from Newport.
The blaze has vented out through the roof of a semi-detached building the property, which is now well ablaze. Smoke can be seen billowing into the air.
Firefighters equipped in breathing apparatus are tackling the fire using main jets and hose reels, with the situation being attacked from the front and rear of the property using 13.5m and 10m ladders.
It is unclear at this moment how the incident began.
UPDATE @ 13:35 – Firefighters have worked quickly to bring the blaze under control drawing water from nearby hydrants. Smouldering can still be seen.
The roof of the residential property has been badly damaged despite the best efforts of emergency crews at the scene.
UPDATE @ 14:15 – Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that nobody was inside the property when the fire broke out, but 2 occupants were in the garden. A neighbour spotted the smoke and alerted them and fire control.
Island Echo understands that the fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom of the property before quickly spreading to the roof.
UPDATE @ 15:30 – Fire appliances from Southsea and Lymington have been brought across to the Isle of Wight to provide fire cover for any further incidents.
Crews remain at Princess Close damping down and investigating the cause.

No East Cowes unit,how long did it take Cowes, Newport or Ryde etc to get through Festival traffic and diversions ?. Lives could of been lost. Response times 30yrs ago were better than today . Getting to stage that one day you want police or ambulance – you will have to wait for them come across on ferry.
