UPDATED: 2 cars have been destroyed and the exterior of a semi-detached property has been damaged in a fire in East Cowes this afternoon (Wednesday).

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are currently attending the incident at Princess Close having been called to the scene at shortly before 15:30.

Firefighters from Newport and Ryde are using hose reels and breathing apparatus to extinguish the blaze, which has also caused some heat damage to a neighbouring property’s porch.

It remains unclear what sparked the fire which earlier sent plumes of black smoke into the air.

The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are checking over 1 person for smoke inhalation.

UPDATE @ 16:20 – The fire has been successfully extinguished and the property saved, thanks to the swift actions of fire crews.

The fire service are now preparing to leave the scene and return to station having damped down the area.

Paramedics have checked over the occupier of the property, but no action has been required.
