Investigations are underway into an accident at an Isle of Wight leisure centre which left 2 girls with injuries including the ‘loss of a finger’.
The accident took place last Thursday at Medina Leisure Centre on the outskirts of Newport during a Wight Flyers Trampolining Club session.
Shockingly, the trampoline is said to have severed a finger of 1 of the girls. She was later rushed to Salisbury Hospital for plastic surgery in a bid to save her digit, it is claimed.
Richard Gower-Crane, Chairman of the Wight Flyers, has said:
“Last Thursday two members of Wight Flyers Trampoline Club were injured following an accident.
“After receiving first aid at Medina leisure centre, one person was taken to St Marys hospital for treatment.
“We wish both members a quick recovery.
“Due to an ongoing investigation, no further information is available”.
The Isle of Wight Council, which owns and operates the leisure centre, says it is working with the Wight Flyers to investigate the cause of the incident.
In a statement issued to Island Echo, an Isle of Wight Council spokesperson has said:
“We are sorry to learn of an accident with a couple of members of the Wight Flyers Trampoline Club and wish them a speedy recovery.
“The Sports hall is hired from 1Leisure three days a week by the Wight Flyers to carry out trampoline sessions using their own equipment.
“In accordance with the hire agreement the club carries out training for all coaches and club members in the use of equipment and have public liability insurance. There are risk assessments in place and an annual equipment inspection by a recognised company.
“When the accident occurred, 1Leisure staff at the centre assisted Wight Flyers’ qualified first aiders and are currently working with the club to investigate the cause of the incident”.

Sports have always been risky, let’s hope all the best for the injured…
True but trampoline users should not be maimed or injured during such a session. Something has obviously gone very badly wrong indeed.
They are kids – not Dr Now’s patients from ‘My 600lb life’ so chances are the trampoline was either not properly installed or not checked for damage and wear and tear as often as it needs to. Not by any chance acquired second hand from a mainland business which replaced theirs because of safety concerns? Isle of Wight leisure attractions love second hand stuff that others wrote off…
Wow speculation in overdrive Bob. Given that you have no facts, maybe restrict your comments to just expressing sympathy for the poor girls who have been injured. Did you not read that one apparently lost a finger? That is terrible. Hope these poor girls recover soon.
Oooh, sounds nasty. Wishing both girls a speedy recovery.
She be able to joint the mob now and be known as nelly nine fingers consigliari for the trampolini family
A child lost a finger you absolute vegetable. Your attempt at humour is as poor as your literacy.
I hope the HSE will be involved to ensure this never happens again. Shocking. Best wishes for a full recovery to the girls concerned.
Take more care in future
