Retained firefighters from Yarmouth and Freshwater have extinguished a bonfire which became out of control and spread to nearby brambles earlier this afternoon (Easter Monday).
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to the developing situation at a property on Halletts Shute at around 14:30 with Yarmouth’s appliance and Freshwater’s water carrier mobilised by fire control.
It is said that a bonfire became out of control, spreading to other areas of the garden and then igniting a number of hollow trees.
Firefighters used hose reels jets to dowse the area, with a thermal imaging camera utilised to check for hotspots.
Islanders are being urged not to light bonfires at this moment in time due to the ill effects on others and the risk it adds to firefighters working in close quarters.

What a waste of our emergency services resources, just so some idiot can have an anti-social bonfire.
More bad bonfires on the isle of wight
More bad behaviour on the IoW
Hope every one is ok ,especially our brave fire fighters!
Bloody idiots on a windy day like today too!! Just as thoughtless as the man who lives behind us and thinks it’s ok to light a bonfire whenever he feels like it..yes u know who you are don’t you!!!!
Fine them or these thoughtless ‘bloody minded’ people won’t take a blind bit of notice.
Nobody really needs to have a bonfire. There are other ways of getting rid of stuff. Without it costing everyone money. Think before you burn
Yeah fair do’s idiot can’t look after his bonfire but as for all this making breathing problems worse really, it’s not dickensian London. Bloke has a fire next door to me in the evening most windows pretty much closed by then and unless you stand out in your adjoining garden taking large lung bursting breaths don’t really see the problem. In Fact if you carry on sat in front of your netflix chopping on crisps you won’t even know its going on. Do feel some people are play a bit “Holier than thou” because they don’t do anything end of and this is a perfect excuse to indulge that kind of lifestyle. Saying that don’t set light to surrounding bushes.
