Firefighters are working to tackle a garage fire that has broken out off the main Sandown to Shanklin road this evening (Sunday).
Flames have totally engulfed the outbuilding – located on the Shanklin side of Skew Bridge – sending black smoke billowing into the dusk sky.
Appliances from Sandown and Shanklin have been mobilised to the scene.
The fire was first sighted at around 18:10.
Southern Vectis buses are unable to serve stops in the local area.
UPDATE @ 18:35 – The swift actions of the local retained firefighters from The Bay have meant that the blaze is already being brought under control.
Hose reels and main jets are being used to dowse the flames with water being pulled from nearby fire hydrants.
The road has been closed while fire crews continue to work to make the scene safe.
Southern Vectis Route 3 are suffering delays as a result of being held within the closed section of the road.
UPDATE @ 19:15 – A convertible car has been completely gutted, along with the detached garage it was parked within.
Firefighters have confirmed that nobody has been injured during the incident nor have any properties nearby been affected.
The road remains closed as fire crews continue to dampen down the area.
UPDATE @ 22:20 – Shanklin Road has reopened in both directions, with the incident closed.
The charred remains of the garage and car are all that is left to see.
