UPDATED: Freshwater Independent Lifeboat has launched to aid a yacht that has broken down and is drifting in the vicinity of Freshwater Bay tonight (Sunday).
Volunteer crew members have manned the inshore lifeboat and are currently working with the casualty vessel to ascertain the best course of action.
Solent Coastguard requested the launch of Freshwater ILB at around 20:35.
Onlookers have gathered on the shore as the sailing yacht drifts closer to the cliffs.
UPDATE @ 21:40 – 1 person has been safely brought ashore by Freshwater’s Inshore Lifeboat (ILB).
The larger lifeboat is now being launched into the darkness to establish a tow with the casualty vessel, which is thought to have a skipper and lifeboat crew member still on board.
The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team are on scene at Freshwater Lifeboat’s boat house.
UPDATE @ 22:58 – The 27ft yacht, suffering from engine failure, has been towed to the safety of Yarmouth Harbour tonight.
It has been confirmed that a 14-year-old teenager and his father called for help via a Pan-Pan distress call at 20:15.
As reported earlier on, the teen was transferred ashore by Freshwater ILB. He is said to have been suffering from seasickness.
The incident has now been brought to a safe conclusion.
