A fresh weather warning has been issued for the Isle of Wight, with forecasters now predicting strong winds of up to 70mph this evening (Thursday), in addition to the heavy rain already expected.
The warning from IW Met Service covers the South Wight coastline from Freshwater Bay through to Ventnor, and around the east coast as far as Bembridge.
The strongest gusts are expected between this evening and the early hours of Friday morning, with the worst conditions likely to hit coastal and high ground areas.
Elsewhere across the Isle of Wight, wind speeds of 50-60mph are still anticipated, making for hazardous conditions Island-wide.
South-southwesterly gusts could lead to tree debris, including leaves, twigs and small branche,s falling onto roads and pathways, as well as large waves along southern and western shorelines. There is the potential for structural damage to buildings.
This new alert comes on top of an existing warning for heavy rainfall, with up to 40mm of rain forecast, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Islanders are urged to take extra care when travelling, especially in exposed areas or near the coast.
