A care home, which was shut down after a damning inspection, could become a temporary home for workers, if planning permission is granted.
Owners of Cornelia Heights, on George Street, Ryde, took the decision to close the care home after a Care Quality Commission inspection raised concerns about patients health and the Isle of Wight Council did not renew its care contract with them.
Now, Sanjay Ramdany is asking the council for permission to change the building’s use from a care home to service accommodation — a stopping place for workers coming to the Island for a short period of time.
The building in the centre of Ryde could have 17 proposed bedrooms — 8 en-suites — making use of the existing amenities, as no structural alterations will be made.
In the design and access statement, planning agents describe the proposals as ‘providing short-term, high-value, service to visiting workers’ with self-catering rooms and a relaxation, gym and entertainment areas provided.
Plans include shared kitchens, bathrooms and a dining area with a manager’s office and live-in accommodation.
The property is also for sale on the open market with a guide price of £600,000-£650,000. Despite being shut down, the PurpleBricks listing describes the property as a former ‘reputable care home’. It is being marketed as a 21-bedroom link detached house.

Me and bert saw a programme on the telly about this sort of caper.
That owner gets lots of these foreign workers and crams them all in like sardines. They pays low rents, but because there is so many per room the landlord makes a fortune. As they pay low rent they never complain about the illegal risk of fire, disease etc by living in overcrowded rooms.
The illegal ones dare not moan neither. Problem is for the rest of the working folk who have to pay a full rent or mortgage, they can’t compete with these workers living so cheap, so they loose the chance of getting a job as they need a certain wage to manage.
They shouldn’t give permission, as it will add to the degradation of the area in my and berts option.
Used to go to the library up Ryde years ago, was much nicer then.
Nope No Nada Not on your Nelly NO!
This is what happens when a town centre becomes a less desirable place to live. Property developers maximise occupancy and rents and take in all comers. Lovely character building as well, how times change.
He didn’t make it owning and running an old people’s home, shut down due to patients safety!!! Now he’s come up with another money making scheme. Shouldn’t be allowed. Money is all this guy is interested in.
