The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Eastern Yar – from Whitwell to Bembridge – following a short period of heavy rainfall.
At Wroxall, some 21mm of rain has been recorded in the past 24 hours alone leading to this alert being issued.
The river level at Alverstone is said to be high at 3.05m.
Islanders are being urged to monitor local water levels and weather conditions, as flooding is possible on the Eastern Yar and its tributaries.
You should avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding. If you have a flood plan, start acting on it.

Surely something has to be wrong with the drainage when every time it rains, and as the article says this rain was just for a short period last night, there’s a flood warning issued.
Unless, of course, the Environment Agency have lowered the criteria for issuing flood warnings? But, why would they do that?
Looking at the rainfall charts for the last 20 years, in the past year we’ve had, at worst, only an average amount of rainfall, and yet we seem to be having a lot more flood warnings.
Perhaps whoever is responsible for the drains (the Environment Agency?) needs to look at making them more effective. Or it just that in the world in which we now live, everything comes with a warning?
You are clearly wrong. In March (108 mm) and April (85 mm), we had double the average amount of rain that normally falls in those months (55 mm and 44 mm, respectively) according to the records published by the island weather station in Newport. In April this year, we had five times the amount recorded last April. The sodden ground explains the greater risk of flooding.
