The Cowes Floating Bridge will be taken out of service for 2 weeks from Tuesday (5th May) as essential maintenance and safety inspections are carried out, the Isle of Wight Council has confirmed.
The link across the River Medina between East Cowes and Cowes will be suspended from Tuesday 5th May through to Tuesday 19th May inclusive.
The usual March shutdown was postponed this year to minimise disruption during the Horsebridge Hill roadworks, which impact key routes to Newport. With those works now at a less disruptive stage, the maintenance programme is set to go ahead.
During the suspension, engineers will carry out essential examinations of the vessel’s guidewheel, hydraulics and lifting eyes. The bridge will also undergo its mandatory annual inspection by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
Teams will take advantage of the downtime to complete general maintenance and remedial works.
A launch service will operate throughout the suspension for foot passengers and cyclists. This service will run daily from 05:00 to 23:00, except on Sunday 10th May and Sunday 17th May, when it will start later at 06:30.
It is expected that the Floating Bridge will return to service at 05:00 on Wednesday 20th May.

Just as we got an alternative route to get to Cowes through all the balls up road works, some one takes the bloody thing off. Do they do it on purpose or what?
Yes to piss us all off ..and it works..wankers.
The ongoing plan is to get vehicles off the road
THEY WANT PEOPLE USING BUSES.
After the incident reported at Lake yesterday involving
numpties travelling on buses
WHO WANTS TO TRAVEL BY BUS UNLESS THEY BAN NUMPTIES
FROM USING THEM!
With all the roadworks taking place even this piece of
junk is much needed.
Why not delay the works until the roadworks have finished!
Because the roadworks are never-ending. It’s all part of the WEF 15 minute cities agenda, embraced by Labour and it’s subversive Fabian Society Prime Minister and cabinet.
