The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a fire at Nine Acres in Newport this evening (Wednesday).
The fire, thought to have been started deliberately, was extinguished by the fire service shortly after arriving on the scene.
Firefighters removed the item that is thought to have been the source of ignition.
Crews have since left, and nobody has been injured in the incident.
As you can see from the charred grass in the inset photograph, it could have been far more serious, without the fast actions of the fire service.
Nine Acres Community Primary School have issued an appeal for information, in the process confirming that the fire was started by someone purposefully setting the field alight with lighter fluid.
A spokesperson for the school has said:
“We can’t express our pure sadness and upset as well as shock that someone would choose to do this.

“The Fire Brigade resources are stretched so much -saving lives-that this mindlessness is so unnecessary.
“We are so grateful to the Little Acres Team who acted swiftly and supported the process and the Fire Brigade for ensuring our wonderful school remains unscathed.
“As a community we urge you to please report any unusual behaviour to 101 and please remind your children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces that playing with fire is dangerous and could have serious consequences”.
