UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are responding to a fire on The Downs near Downend this afternoon (Tuesday).
Billowing smoke that can be seen for miles around has resulted in the mobilisation of an appliance from Newport.
The crew are currently ascertaining the best access point to the remote location, close to Robin Hill Country Park.
UPDATE @ 13:05 – Firefighters have dowsed the fire with water to extinguish what has been confirmed as controlled burning.
The crew forced access to a field to reach the scene.
Thr Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have now left the scene and the farmer has rexsecured the access gate.
