The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has responded to reports of a fire within the shafts of the Shanklin Cliff Lift this evening (Friday).
2 appliances from Sandown and Shanklin were called to the scene on Shanklin Esplanade at just gone 20:05, with 1 appliance quickly moving to a position at the top of the cliff.
Crews worked to identify that the smell of smoke was originating from the nearby car park, not the lift.
The fire service has since left the scene.
It was originally reported that the fire service were called to free persons trapped in the lift. This was not the case and the article has been updated to reflect new information.
