FIRE SERVICE MOBILISED TO ST MARY’S HOSPITAL

UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have mobilised more than 5 appliances to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport this afternoon (Friday).

At around 16:35 the fire service were alerted to a potential fire in the north section of the hospital by the stroke unit, coronary care unit and the children’s ward.

2 fire engines from Newport, 2 from Ryde and the aerial appliance from Newport are all on scene alongside a duty officer.

UPDATE @ 17:24 – Crews are investigating what has been confirmed as a smell of smoke.

Appliances are standing by, but are expected to be stood down shortly.

UPDATE @ 18:22 – Investigations have found that an electrical motor within an air conditioning unit caught fire, causing the smell of smoke.

Thankfully, the fire self-extinguished prior to the arrival of fire crews.

The incident has been brought to a close.
