UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are attending a 25 x 25m fire in the open at Borthwood Farm in Alverstone this afternoon (Thursday).
2 appliances from Shanklin and Ryde and 2 water carriers from Ventnor and Freshwater are currently on scene in the rural location. They were mobilised at just gone 14:00.
Its thought the fire has taken hold of a pile of wood.
Crews are working quickly to bring the blaze under control.
No persons or animals are in danger.
UPDATE @ 15:31 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have taken to Twitter to say:
“The IWFRS have seen a dramatic increase in fires in the open caused by unattended bonfires and carelessly discarded cigarettes. Please be extra vigilant and careful during this hot, dry spell.
“Where the vegetation is so dry a small fire can quickly get out of control.”
This latest fire comes just hours after a number of sheds and a tree were destroyed by fire in nearby Shanklin, as previously reported by Island Echo.
