Fire crews are tackling a fire that has broken out in a flat on Bluebell Meadows in Newport this afternoon (Sunday).
The incident has occurred at a block of flats on Godric Road.
Appliances from Cowes and Newport were mobilised to the scene at around 14:00.
Charred marks can be seen around the window of the 1st floor property from the roadside, indicating the severity of the blaze.
Firefighters have entered the property in breathing apparatus to gain control of the blaze using a single hose reel jet, with water being extracted from nearby hydrants.
The road has been blocked between Beauchamp Drive and Wellesley Way whilst the incident is brought under control.
Residents of the block have been evacuated from the residential premises.
UPDATE @ 15:30 – Firefighters are using positive pressure ventilation to rid the property of acrid smoke.
UPDATE @ 15:50 – The situation is now under control and with firefighters packing up ready to head back to the station.

Lack of ‘meadows’ shocking omission.
why is everyone else expected to compensate them for their lack of insurance ..Once again sponging off others
Steven that has got to be one of the best posts ever.
So accurate you must also live here?
Thanks for correcting location
The good news is, no Bluebells, or any Meadows were damaged in the fire. Nor will they ever again be as crushed under concrete and bricks, not for a while, but the rest of eternity.
Still the grateful tax credit kept chavs make it so worth the loss of natural, true beauty. Now, the only remaining beauty is fake, spray tan or, glued on glam of fake lashes, implants of silicone and painted nails all paid for by their so called poverty level children’s benefits.
To all your arrogant nasty turds. This is our families house. They both work very hard to provide for their family .
They have lost everything only the clothes they had on. 2 year old and 4 year old have lost all their clothes and toys everything. Karma can be a good thing so hopefully you all get yours .
I am afraid there are a lot of nasty and unpleasant trolls posing on this site and the site does nothing to stop them. I get the need for free speech, but the stuff these people post is pure nastiness.
I imagine that they are all pathetic, sad, lonely people whose only enjoyment is upsetting others online (they would be too cowardly to do it in person).
Considering how long posts are in moderation before appearing there is no excusing IE for allowing this. Very suspicious how the nasty posts appear straight out of moderation with a ton of upvotes already.
Cheryl, don’t look at these pages, they can be very upsetting. I’m so sorry for the traumatic fire and loss of your home, at least you are all OK. It sounds like our hero keyworker fireservice did a great job as usual. Very best wishes to your family.
Is there anything that we may do to help the family?
at least I know i don’t have to buy insurance and provide cover for myself when I can just get a go fund me page up now, to compensate for my carelessness. Will save me plenty in insurance cover.
Why does everyone have to be so judgemental these days.
I live opposite the flats in question majority of people who live here work full time.
Don’t smoke weed, look after there houses.
Just like my husband and I.
The poor family who have young children have suffered by this fire need support and not stupid comments.
We are all free to live our life’s as we wish. The UK was a democracy the last time I checked.
Some people have noithing better to do but poke blame and tar everyone with the same brush just because they live on certain road or area
So shallow.. get a life.
Unfortunately this island is full of xenophobic ignorant narrow minded people.
Fine being ‘free to live how we wish’ so LONG as the rest of us aren’t funding lazy take only lifestyle choices.
Those in rented homes with two children pay next to nothing in rent and c.tax, only have to work 16hrs per week, and then get their wage made up to better than many full time childless people.
This is the issue, can’t blame spongers taking it, most of us would, but if you are the one funding it, you can’t blame us pointing it out to the less enlightened who fall for the tripe that they are in poverty.
That poor family have lost their home, and the first thing you can think of to write is that!!
Do you live there? I suggest not. You seem to be tarring the entire estate with the same brush.
There are a very small minority on that estate, that live like this. Most people are hard working families.
It’s no different to anywhere else on this island or the country for that matter.
You need to step away from your keyboard warrior castle, that you must clearly live in and take a look around the area you live in.
Island echo, do you ever actually monitor some of these vile comments.
Says a Willet. Pot Kettle Black
Hi Steven, do you know the family personally ? You seem like a really nice person, maybe we could meet for a drink and a chat ….
For your information, my daughter and son in law are both in full time employment, own their flat and are not spongers as you so kindly put it.
They have just lost everything in a fire.
The neighbours were amazing and all rallied together regardless of their own situations.
Keep your ridiculous, rude and pathetic comments to yourself as you don’t know what you are talking about.
Do you know how the fire started, just to provide advice to neighbouring home owners?
if they owned it, as in a mortgage, they will have had insurance..why beg off others..make a claim, or as I suspect, they had no insurance and are sponging off others
no insurance, no sympathy
You are an idiot …
Have you ever had to put in an insurance claim an hour after your home has caught fire ?
You know, with just the clothes on your back and all that ?
Please be sure to let me know if your home is ruined by a fire and you have nothing for yourself or your children for weeks whilst sorting insurance etc… As I’ll definitely help you with my middle finger !
They’re not “sponging” off others in the slightest, They have just lost there home, There stability as have the children.
So before you be pathetic and judge someone maybe put yourself in there shoes, this comment is disgusting and irrelevant. Have a bit more respect this is vile, Take yourself somewhere else clearly nothing better to do then judge others to make yourself feel bigger n better.
Still managed to find time to get a go fund me up though didn’t they – funny that, as most insurance cover allows for temp accom etc – unless of course you didn’t have any in the first place.
Someone else actually set up the go fund me page. Get your facts straight before you make nasty unnecessary comments.
Ever thought someone may have set it up on their behalf? Not everyone can afford extortionate insurance over the priority of heating, eating and providing for their children. I’ve had extremely lean times in the past and although I’ve never not been insured. If you had the faintest of ideas of what it’s like you wouldn’t be so quick to judge.
really emily – did they have insurance, have they not taken responsibility for their own lives, rather than rushing to social media to beg and cry. Most insurers will provide costs for temp accommodation and short term expenses – assuming that they actually had cover.

you sad little moron
The best comment I’ve ever read, Steven Willet
Most already do, tax credit claimants get a lot extra and pay no c.tax and rent, or very heavily subsidised.
How else do you think they have orange spray tans and two foot finger nails and lashes, by working?
Easier to breed the next generation of spongers and be paid well and have little in the way of necessities to spend on, AND have half the week or more off, to do as you please.
So please tell me what any of that has got to do with somebody’s flat catching fire and a family losing everything in the process? Shame on you and all the other ignorant scum on here spouting crap like that.
do the usual 10 or so scumbags that frequent this site have nothing better to do all day, just waiting for some bad news?
I usually start drinking around 10:30 in the morn, then check here now and then
Stuart you still on the pot
what’s me sitting on the toilet got to do with it?
I see on your twitter you want the Tories out.
Gonna vote for them just to wind you up
