UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance at an address on St Thomas’ Street in Ryde this afternoon (Thursday) amid fears of a hazardous materials incident.
An occupant of the residential property has become ‘overwhelmed’ by fumes. The woman is being treated by paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
3 fire appliances – 2 from Ryde and 1 from Newport – are on scene having been alerted to the situation at just before 12:20.
The road remains open and there have been no evacuations of nearby properties.
UPDATE @ 13:17 – The female casualty has been conveyed to hospital this lunchtime for further assessment and monitoring.
Meanwhile fire crews have been unable to ascertain what has caused the woman to become overwhelmed.
Firefighters do not believe there is anything inside the flat itself which has caused an issue. They are now awaiting the arrival of the building’s landlord in order to check other areas.
The incident has been scaled back, with just 1 appliance from Ryde now on scene.
UPDATE @ 14:10 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue have now left the scene. The incident has been deemed a false alarm.
