EMERGENCY RESPONSE BY FIRE CREWS TO DERELICT FORMER CARE HOME

UPDATED: Firefighters from multiple stations across the Island are attending a fire at the former Stonehaven care home in Sandown tonight (Wednesday).

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised shortly before 22:00 and currently more than 6 appliances are on scene.

This incident is one of many on the Isle of Wight today which has stretched the firefighters to their limits. Earlier on resources from Hampshire were drafted in to maintain a safe level of fire cover.

UPDATE @ 22:36 – Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have entered the building to tackle the fire within. They are using 2 main jets and 3 hose reels.

Positive Pressure Ventilation is also being used to clear the former care home of smoke.

Carter Street has been cordoned off in the interests of public safety.

UPDATE @ 22:51 – The fire appears to now be out, however crews remain on scene damping down and conducting an examination of the full premises.

UPDATE THURSDAY – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have brought the incident to a close, however investigations are to be carried out alongside Police due to the suspicious nature of the fire.
