As first reported by Island Echo, emergency services were alerted to the unusual situation shortly after 21:00. 2 ambulances and a fire crew were mobilised to the scene at The London on Swanmore Road – a sheltered accommodation unit.
It’s there that firefighters from Ryde Fire Station spent over 2 hours cutting the casualty free from his predicament with the assistance of several paramedics and what is thought to be a doctor rushed over from St Mary’s Hospital.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was called into action over fears the man would need to be rushed to Southampton General Hospital. The life-saving helicopter landed at Simeon Street Rec but the decision was taken at the 11th hour to transfer the casualty to St Mary’s by land ambulance instead.
The traumatic injury sustained is said to have been potentially life-threatening.
Taking to Twitter, the crew from Ryde Fire Station have said that they have all experienced and learnt a lot from the incident. Strangely, it was only last week that they trained for a similar rescue scenario.
