A Dominos delivery driver caught drink driving for the third time in 6 years when his car broke down at the side of the road has been handed a 4-year driving ban.
33-year-old David Miles, of Cedar Drive in Shanklin, blew 2-and-a-half times the drink-drive limit – 96 – when he was arrested by Police on 21st January this year.
The Isle of Wight Magistrates Court heard on Friday that Police were travelling along Newport Road, Hale Common at 23:35 when they came across a broken-down vehicle. The officers stopped to provide assistance in moving the Honda Jazz to a safe place, with Miles steering the vehicle and 2 officers pushing from the rear.
However, after the Jazz had been driven by Miles, it became clear that the vehicle wasn’t the other matter to be dealt with. Whilst conducting some standard vehicle checks a marker alerted officers to a report from earlier in the night that the vehicle had been swerving onto the pavement and up a bank in Arreton, with the driver also seen drinking from a can in Morrisons car park. A roadside breath test was carried out, which Miles failed.
Magistrates heard from the Crown Prosecution Service that Miles, who stated he had been driving for 9 hours on the day of his arrest, was previously convicted of drink driving in 2015 and again in 2018, with his latest ban having only ended in December 2021. It’s the act of getting behind the wheel and steering that led to the latest drink driving charge being brought before the court, even though it was on the Police’s direction.
Defending, Mr Osborne said his client no longer works as a delivery driver and has started a new position as a chef in Shanklin. Little mitigation was offered, other than stating Miles’ mother was quite ill with a kidney disease.
Taking into account Miles’ previous convictions and the fact he was driving for reward, Magistrates handed down a 48-month driving ban and ordered him to complete a 12-month community order with 20 rehabilitation days, as well as paying a £120 fine, £85 costs and a £95 surcharge.
To be employed as a delivery driver, surely the company employing him would have done background checks? Obviously Dominos employs anyone, despite having TWO previous records for drink driving. Shame on you Dominos, you do not deserve to be in business.
Really poor reporting, the fact that at the time he worked for the company doesn’t mean he was on duty at the time of the incident.

It doesn’t matter, if at the time in question, he wasn’t driving for Dominos. The fact remains that Dominos hired a delivery driver with two previous convictions for drink driving and he’s obviously not learnt his lesson!
Should have been jailed, with a lifetime driving ban.
So many drink drivers on the Island
Maybe road checks would be a good idea.
We need to get dangerous people off the road
Excuses, excuses, excuses, I’m not sure about all the other readers but I’m so Damn fed up of reading about all of these low life’s who know that drinking, drug driving, is not acceptable, but they continue to do it. They need to be taught a lesson, but what is the answer our justice system make it so easy for them to commit the crimes again!
Us law abiding citizens are the ones who suffer, luckily no one was hurt or killed, what is going to be done???
Does the magistrate/judge think a 4 year ban will stop this idiot from driving drunk again?
Needed to be put away at her Majesty’s pleasure, see how he liked that.
Can’t help but chuckle in the middle of this news is the advert for an iq test
