37-year-old Thomas Ward has been slapped with a 12-month ban and a £120 fine after being caught drug driving, prompted by an incident in which he allegedly ran over a man’s foot.
Ward, of Hunts Road in St Lawrence, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with 1 count of drug driving (cannabis), a charge he pleaded guilty to at the first opportunity.
The court heard from the Crown Prosecution Service that on 26th August last year, Ward went to his ex-partner’s address in Dudley Road and began shouting and banging on the windows of the property. A member of the public, Mr Compton, spotted the 37-year-old acting oddly and confronted him. It’s then that Ward got into his vehicle and drove away, running over Mr Compton’s foot in the process.
Police were alerted to the situation and later stopped Ward’s vehicle on nearby Ventnor High Street. A drugs wipe was carried out, which gave a positive result for cannabis. Ward was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and actual bodily harm, which was later upgraded to grievous bodily harm. However, the assault charge was not pursued.
Defending, Jim Osborne said that his client, who suffers from psychosis, anxiety and depression, denied running over Mr Compton’s foot but admitted drug driving. Mr Osborne said that Thomas Ward deeply regretted his actions and only drove for a short period.
Magistrates fined Thomas Ward £120 and ordered him to pay £85 costs with a £34 surcharge, with a stern word that he should pay the fine and not his parents, who he now resides with. They also banned him from driving for 12 months.

What a surprise, another low life who needs his testicles removed.
He suffers with psychosis probably because he smokes too much weed!!
Another drug driver. Too many of this these days.
Exactly – these are psychoactive drugs after all, they do interfere with one’s mental processes. The deeper individuals get into druggery, the more psychologically disturbed they become.
A large proportion of the worst crimes have been carried out by such deranged criminals, turning them into dangerous elements in our society and they continue to do their worst.
Hardly surprising given the light sentencing culture – just look at the lenient sanctions here.
Drug and Drink drivers = lowest form of scum that need imprisonment and a lifetime driving ban.
With all his problems! should he be driving?
Was the foot, attached to his body at the time?
did he put his foot out to try and stop the car? that makes no sense
