The driver of a Honda Civic has been arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the limit following a crash involving several vehicles on Newport Road in Cowes tonight (Saturday).
The Honda crashed into 3 vehicles before coming to a stop in the middle of the carriageway shortly before 22:30.
1 driver has described to Island Echo how they had to take evasive action to avoid a head on impact. Their vehicle, a VW Polo, was clipped on the rear quarter panel and the driver sustained minor head injuries as a result.
2 others vehicles were also damaged, including a Kia 4×4.
The main road into Cowes has been closed to traffic between the junctions of Three Gates Road and Mill Hill Road – in both directions – whilst emergency services deal with the incident, which has occurred outside Cowes Medical Centre.
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are on scene alongside Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Retained firefighters from Cowes are standing by with a hose reel jet in the interests of safety.
Motorists are diverting locally with Southern Vectis’ Route 1 buses diverting from Park & Ride via Three Gates Road and Round House.
Buses to Newport will use Newport Road and then divert via Mill Hill Road, Round House and Three Gates Road to reach the Park & Ride.

All to common especially at weekends, just a total lack of responsibility and respect for life and property.
Those responsible should be thoroughly ashamed, unfortunately the law is no deterrent.
What a moron. People that drink or drug drive should be dealt with by the courts in the harshest way. These low life could kill innocent people whilst in this state and behind the wheel.
I do wish cars were prevented from parking on the road here, though. It’s such a busy thoroughfare and big lorries thunder up and down on route to Artic Rd and cars exiting the Doctor’s surgery pull out without even looking at what’s coming down the road…
Drugs and drink driving are on the increase, they should be hit hard rather than knock the older driver. In my opinion there are lots more drug related drivers around, the police should seek these people out rather than wait for an accident like this.
Pubs open again and all the drunk drivers come out to play. Time the landlords start taking responsibility for sending these people out on the roads after a night of drinking. I’ve worked in a pub, we know who is doing this, but do nothing to stop them. Only the landlord has the authority to say “Oi mate, give me your keys or i’ll call the cops”. Instead we’re told to give them more booze.
I possible drink driver causing multiple damage to innocent peoples vehicles, and what will the courts if found guilty do, not enough.
