UPDATED: The Co-Op store at Landguard Road in Shanklin has been forced to closed today (Sunday) after a heavy downpour of rain sent water pouring through the ceiling and onto the supermarket floor.
More than 30mm of rain has fallen in the Shanklin area over the past 12 hours – some 5mm more than predicted by local forecasters IW MET Service. The majority of that rain was unleashed upon us this morning, with a few flashes of lightning and claps of thunder thrown in.
Part of the building’s external fascia has also fallen down and is said to have struck a member of the public on the arm. They are not thought to have been injured.
A clean up operation is underway but the store is likely to remain closed for the remainder of the day.
Meanwhile in Lake, Island Echo readers say that Morrisons supermarket is also suffering from ingress of water. The store remains open, however.
UPDATE MONDAY – The store has now re-opened as normal.
