A crash at the Hare and Hounds junction at Downend is causing significant travel disruption this morning (Friday).
Emergency services are on scene having been alerted to the collision around 11:40.
The crash, which has taken place on the westbound carriageway of The Downs Road approaching the traffic lights, has been described as a rear-end shunt involving 2 vehicles.
It’s the third such incident at the busy junction in the past 2 weeks alone.
The Downs has been closed in both directions.
UPDATE @ 12:30 – The driver of a Subaru Forester – a male in his 80s – has been assessed by paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service but has been discharged from their care.
An eyesight test has been carried out at the roadside over concerns for the driver’s vision, but the elderly male passed the standard distance test.
The vehicle is now being recovered and the road is excepted to reopen shortly.
The second vehicle involved, understood to be a VW pick-up, has been able to be driven away from the rear having sustained minor rear-end damage.
UPDATE @ 13:00 – The road has now re-opened in both directions.

Careless driving by any chance.
OMG WHAT AN AMAZING STORY!!
More idiots will be along soon…
Have you ever considered expanding on that very limited repertoire, or are you content on keeping it at remedial level?
Either way, you’ve become extremely tiresome!
That would be the point.
While people keep responding to, and downvoting, this person it knows it is upsetting people.
And causing upset is the raison d’être for internet trolls.
Its the Curse of Downend!
Not a curse just crap drivers
More bad driving on the IW
Another inept elderly driver..
Are all drivers who cause a shunt given a roadside eye sight test or just the specially selected older divers?
Agreed.
Plenty of inept young drivers around without a licence, tax,mot or insurance.
Another inept ageist comment.
On Thursday I witnessed a young lad driving a Corsa jump the traffic lights at the same junction. So nothing to do with age in this accident.
Exactly. Drivers of all age ranges and sex have all been involved in accidents here on the island. Inept drivers can be young, middle aged and old also male or female. I’ve been driving for approx 54 years with a clean licence so definitely not inept. In this accident no charges laid, the driver passed a roadside eyesight test and no one was injured thank god.
Give up your license before you harm someone!!
Hang up your keys
No, just stupidity and there are certainly many IOW drivers who can’t drive correctly and safely even if their lives depended on it!
I see the Police still can’t be bothered to wear hi viz – for their safety- at RTC’s
I bet there were about 10 of them turned up for a minor traffic accident
The traffic lights outside the Hare & Hounds pub, without a doubt need left & right filter lights and lanes. The traffic gets backed up down passed Arreton Manor that was and way back passed Robin Hill in the other direction.
If you are wanting to go straight across heading towards the Robin Hill roundabout at the lights you don’t move because the road is single laned so you get stuck behind all those cars waiting to turn right to go over the Downs.
Turn the Hare and Hounds into an A&E save Ambulance time
Should have put a roundabout there.
Lots of room, and no costly traffic lights. Just do it.
Ah look another old driver who should have been taken off the road
Ah look, another ageist homophobe who should be taken off the Island.
oh look another karen
Just as well nobody was injured.
St Mary’s has a sign outside ‘piss off, were closed’.
Before the accident I was driving on that road around 11am or just after, toward Sandown when a black suv car driven by a white haired male driver coming in the opposite direction was driving on my side of the road while overtaking 2 cars! I really thought it was going to be a head on collision as he wasn’t moving back into his lane! I slammed on the brakes, used my horn and squeezed as far over as I could and he eventually moved over! Luckily my car is small but if I’d been driving anything bigger we would have collided.Very shortly after 2 police cars and 1 van drove past so I’m guessing it was the same car and driver in the accident above!
Another old piss stainer! Shouldn’t be on the rds! Half of them can hardly see past there own bonnet and the other half are too scared to go over 30mph any where!! They will say “I’ve never had an accident in my 50 years of driving” but they have probably caused a few frustrating all the poor sods stuck behind them!! Get the bus!
Is he looking for his skis in the photo? Hopefully they will ban him now!
I was a few cars behind and this driver numerous times crossed the white line avoiding tree shadows on the road causing oncoming traffic to take avoiding action! I thought initially it was someone on phone as was looking to call it in. Something clearly wrong with eyesight as at junction he plowed at 30mph plus into back of stationary vehicle. Yes, I have supplied my details along with others at the crash scene following this driver who witnessed the same
As i said earlier, careless driving by any chance.
Observe the sticks, observe the feet…
