Police have put a 48-hour dispersal order in place for Newport Town Centre as anti-social behaviour is said to be causing members of the public harassment, alarm and distress.
The order, which is implemented under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, came into force at 20:20 last night (Friday) and runs until the same time on Sunday evening.
Dispersal orders enable police to deal with any issues of Anti-social behaviour (ASB) in a directed area more effectively, and give officers the power to order a person to leave the area with no return within the specified time period. Those who refuse to comply with the order are committing a criminal offence and are liable for arrest.
It comes as anti-social behaviour and the associated criminality, such as shoplifting and disorder, continues to be an problem in the county town.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
”ASB and the associated criminality makes life miserable for local people and businesses.
“We will continue to make enquiries and take action in relation to shopliftings and public order incidents in the town, and encourage anyone affected by ASB or retail crime to please keep reporting incidents to us so we can use the most effective tactics available to us to tackle it”.

What the hell is wrong with these people who are causing trouble in the Town. They need to be sorted out, once and for all. If it’s kids, involve their parents and fine them and then put the kids on a curfew. Why should half wits be allowed to run amok and theive from the shops. Make their parents take more responsibility for their brats.

On Friday night there were kids about 13 years old swinging on the scaffolding on the edge of the flat roof of the NHS building they are renovating, corner of Castlehold Lane/High St. I rang the police as the kids were intoxicated on something & I was concerned for their safety as well as for any passers by. They got inside the building too. The police response was ‘it’s not something we deal with’. Nothing more you can do is there?
