A near 10-year campaign to replace a ‘dated’ skatepark in East Cowes could soon be successful. East Cowes Town Council agreed on Thursday evening (22nd March) to apply for a loan from the government’s public works loan board to fund the replacement of equipment at its skatepark on Vectis Road. The council said the 20-year-old facility is now ‘very dated’ and causes ‘significant’ limitations to the wheeled sports that can be done there and the skills that can be learnt. The surface around the ramps is ‘very rough and uneven’ with the metal ramps themselves said to have a higher degree of risk due to it being a ‘less grippy’ surface, dented and extremely hot in the summer. The current park was also said to be inaccessible for a variety of users, and not designed for them. Calls for a new skatepark first arose in 2015, and with the need for outdoor areas highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, the town council consulted East Cowes residents in 2021 to see if the work would be agreeable. More than 150 responses were received with a ‘clear desire’ for new facilities for the community. Instead of the metal ramps, the town council is looking to build a facility for beginners and more experienced riders to enjoy the site with ‘fun bumps’, stairs, ramps and banks made out of concrete.
The town council is looking to borrow £100,000 from the government — £15,000 for final designs to be drawn up and £85,000 to build it — over the next 22 years. If accepted, the council would pay around £7,800 a year and it said it “does not intend to increase” the amount residents pay for the purpose of repaying the loan. One concern from a town resident said it would be ‘foolhardy’ for the council to tie itself into a long loan when the length of the loan would outlast the skatepark. Councillor Cameron Palin said the current skatepark has lasted 10 years longer than first thought and the concrete skatepark proposed would last a lot longer. Councillor Stephen Hendry said the lifespan of a concrete skatepark was at least 20 years, and no maintenance costs would have to be paid on it as it currently has to with the existing skatepark, so replacing it was a ‘no brainer’. Councillor Holly Irwin said there was a growing community around the skatepark and an ongoing need for the facilities.

Having park reduces crime by some 75% , so get it built. Some questions though 1) How does it cost £15,000 for design ( Users have the knowledge and best ideas and £85,000 for some concrete? Sure island contractors would do discount or something for advertising / publicity etc
No idea. You can build a small house for £85k materials. Would be cheaper for the community to build it, but, well, contracts eh? Those with their hands on the purse and jobs for the boys etc…
Is that me
Can you indeed? Lets say you actually could get the materials for £85k (extremely questionable) the £85k mentioned is to BUILD it so includes all materials + labour.
Whilst you may or may not agree with the valuation you have kinda missed the point completely referencing materials only in your comment.
I wouldn’t rush into replacing anything in East Cowes. It’ll only get wrecked.
The old one is twenty years old and has not yet been “wrecked”. Just warn out as it’s the few places kids get to be kids. The Tories shutdown all the youth centres in the 80’s and now wonder why the kids are roaming the streets getting in trouble. Well you made your bed, so best lay in it.
Blimey, that is over £71,000, that is seventy one thousand pounds, interest to pay on this one project. How many more projects are going to be started in the next twenty two years.
Why is it all councils have to keep borrowing money, can’t they plan ahead and save some of the money coming in for future unknown projects? Get real, you can’t keep borrowing, stop it, it’s not a bottomless pit. Other councillors will be voted in and not be able to do anything with a budget that is negative.
I had better stop and step down from my soap box.
Just a minute, it would be better to arrange free transport to other facilities on the island than build it.
So, it’s going to take 22 years to build the new skatepark ? Better reporting please.
Take out the bit within the dashes then it makes sense. Borrowing 100k over 22 years.
Stop giving you mate Southern vectors money when you what have to borrow a thing.?
Should get the same guys in that did ryde !! Absolutely amazing and a lot of local help I believe the money spend was under £7k !!

Build more and let the boomers go get a life. Leave the kids alone.
