Former prison officer Danny Woodford is amongst 17 new recruits at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and will soon begin his career as a firefighter with Green Watch at Ryde.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service’s latest recruits completed their training on Thursday (15th June) with a graduation ceremony in front of friends and family.
The graduates commenced their training with the Learning and Development team back in February, where they undertook a programme which has prepared them for life as 21st-century firefighters.
Now skilled in the art of running out hoses, ladder drills and wearing breathing apparatus sets, the 13 firefighters are also trained to perform Immediate Emergency Care and deliver safety messages to their communities.
In a world away from their previous careers, the service’s newest firefighters have each been assigned to a station across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight where they will develop their knowledge as operational firefighters.
Working with his new crew at Ryde, former prison guard Danny Woodford will be helping to keep the Isle of Wight safe. He is the only new recruit to be assigned to an Island station.
Station Manager for Learning and Development, Lacey Plumbley, has said:
“Today our firefighters are required to provide emergency medical care and deliver important safety messaging, as well as tackle fires and rescue casualties.
“Over the last 17 weeks our trainees have gone on an incredible journey together, displaying great professionalism and skill in order to reach this stage of their careers.
“I would like to thank our Learning and Development team, who have worked tirelessly to deliver a programme which has shaped our trainees into the firefighters they are today, ready to join their new teams on station in living our organisation’s values, and making life safer for our communities.”

I thought we didn’t like overners?
Can’t believe how sexist this comment is !! This person ( you can’t see what gender they are) has actually passed out so has passed all their tests. They are braver than you sitting behind your keyboard you are nothing but a troll.
It’s not being sexist at all ..you do realise a firefighters job is to save lives!! Imagine you’re unconscious in ya bed, how is she/he gonna do a fireman’s carry. Is she only gonna be sent to nursery schools?? People need to stop being so woke. All actions have consequences….
It’s what’s known as positive discrimination
Very well done to all.
Hope he’s good at snooker!
