DanceMakers marked its 12th anniversary on Thursday (11th April) with a celebration of tea, cake and community spirit, reflecting over a decade of keeping older adults active and connected through dance.
The class originally began as a 16-week Adult and Community Learning course run by Independent Arts. Now, it continues under the leadership of Freelance Community Dance Artist Michelle Hainsworth as part of Community Dance, Isle of Wight.
Some members have been attending since the very beginning, with current participants ranging in age from 65 to 90 – and some even bring their daughters along to join in.
Michelle Hainsworth has said:
“DanceMakers has become more than just a dance class.
“Over the years friendships have been forged and we’ve all got to know each other very well. I’ve even got to know grandchildren, great grandchildren, and brothers and sisters, who sometimes come to class when they are on the island for holidays.”
DanceMakers offers accessible movement for all abilities, with exercises that can be done seated or standing. Sessions focus on improving strength, balance, and coordination, while also creating opportunities for group dance and shared laughter.
To welcome new members, DanceMakers will be holding a free taster session after Easter on Friday 2nd May from 10:45 to 12:15 at St John’s Hall in Newport. The session will include an hour of gentle movement followed by refreshments and a chance to meet others.
No booking is required – attendees are encouraged to wear loose-fitting clothes and soft shoes. For more information, contact Michelle on 07503 153 329 or email [email protected].
