Cyclists of all ages and abilities are being invited to join the first-ever Red Squirrel Ride on Saturday 20th September, offering a unique opportunity to explore the Isle of Wight’s scenic off-road trails while raising funds for local animals in need.
Organised by the RSPCA Isle of Wight, the event will see all proceeds go directly toward caring for vulnerable, abandoned and neglected animals across the Island. As an independent branch, the Isle of Wight centre receives no government funding and relies on public support to continue its vital work.
To make it easier for mainland participants, Wightlink is offering 20% off ferry travel for all registered riders and their supporters.
The Red Squirrel Ride features 2 circular, largely traffic-free routes. Riders can choose between a 16-mile family-friendly loop or a more challenging 34-mile route, which includes extra hills for those seeking an adventure. Both routes make use of the Island’s disused railway lines and cycle paths, starting and finishing at the RSPCA Isle of Wight Animal Centre near Merstone.
Veronica Chrisp, Marketing and Fundraising Manager at RSPCA Isle of Wight, has said:
“We want this to be a welcoming, relaxed event that celebrates the Island’s amazing landscapes while supporting a very serious cause.
“Every pound raised will help us care for and rehome animals that have nowhere else to turn.”
Organisers are encouraging early sign-ups to help with planning. Whether a seasoned cyclist or someone simply looking for an active day out with friends or family, the Red Squirrel Ride promises a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors while supporting an important Island cause.

Traffic free routes, let’s hope so.
So many cyclists take the p*ss on Island Roads.
Saw a bunch of Numpty cyclists today all cycling side by side
holding each others hands holding up the traffic.
Also a Numpty cyclist was cycling near Tesco Express
in Wootton and a Police car with blue lights couldn’t
easily get by. I imagine the cyclist had ear pods in.
Also why do Numpty cyclists not use the cycle lane
along Fairlee Road!, they p*ss off motorists everyday
Yet cyclists pay fcuk all to be on the road and half of the
Numpty’s don’t stop at Red Lights.
Time for them to respect the road, think Car, Bus and Lorry
NOT THINK CYCLIST!!
Hello ranter. A pity that you can’t use normal English & not have to resort veiled obscenities. What the hell is this to d with a charity ride on the Red Squirrel Trail?
